Once smitten, forever bitten. I was intrigued by cartoons, and especially the animated masterpieces of the Walt Disney Studios, from a very early age. When I went to college I learned to love the Canadian National Film Board and all sorts of experimental, indie animators. I studied under Jack Slutzky, Erik Timmerman and Malcolm Spaull. It was a blast. I was hired right out of school by Walt Disney World for a secret animation department on the East Coast. That was fun!
After a thirty-something year hiatus from drawing and panning and zooming, I decided to shake the rust off my wrists and do it some more. Software and a Mac, along with a class at Art Center, made it possible. Deep Magic Song & Drawing Co. was launched as a result of this, and as a way of coping with the quarantine that impacted us all. In collaboration with Singer-songwriter Brad Colerick, the first film out of the gate was "Time Machine," a frolic through Nebraska in a flying Lincoln Continental. Next up was Manzanar (Yuki), a tribute to a mother and child who were swept up in the madness of WWII, as America imprisoned 120,000 U.S. citizens simply because of a fear of their race. (Italian- and German-Americans were not sent to camps.) What's next?
Think Circus . . .
